May 07 - The show goes on thanks to Aspect
While many of Aspect’s jobs could be described as fairly standard, from time to time we do hit upon a project that’s a little beyond the norm. That’s what happened last autumn when we were called in by Ensafe Consultants to one of the UK’s leading regional theatres following the discovery of widespread asbestos contamination.
The four month, £350K programme of works saw the Aspect Milton Keynes team remove 660 seats from the auditorium, plus carpets, ceilings, lighting, projectors and speakers - basically the entire contents of a working theatre, all dismantled and disposed of. With a 480m2 bird cage scaffold erected, the cladding to the structural beams was then stripped carefully away to allow the asbestos to be removed safely. Once the area had been passed for re-occupation the beams were painted with an intumescent paint to give a one hour fire rating while the auditorium’s walls and ceiling were painted in readiness for a wholesale refurbishment. As they say in theatreland, the show must go on – and thanks to Aspect’s timely and expert intervention, it did earlier this year!
